TomTom HOME gives error trying to backup your device [FIX]

Before embarking on a road trip to the USA I bought the USA and Canada maps for my TomTom One IQ. Having never installed maps on my TomTom before I thought it wise to take a backup of the device as it is now, just in case anything went wrong installing the new maps.

I noticed TomTome HOME software had a “Backup my device” option which is meant to just take a complete snapshot of your device to allow for a full restore at a later date.

After clicking to run the backup I was presented with a progress bar:

and then after a few mintutes I was told the backup had failed “An error occurred. Unable to create the files required to copy this item to your computer”

with the option to click to view further details, which look like:

ERROR: DesktopLib/FileCopy/Error: An error occurred. Unable to create the files required to copy this item to your computer.
@ .\controller\FileCopyThread.cpp(161)
An error occurred while reading this file: “F:\autorun.inf”
An error occurred while writing to this file: “C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Backup\ONE\Backup01\InternalMemory\autorun.inf”
Access is denied.

Straight away I knew what the problem would be, my anti-virus and anti-malware software. The first error occurred reading a file called “autorun.inf” and it seems trying to copy this to my local disk. Auto-copying an autorun.inf file will almost certainly set alarm bells ringing in most good anti-virus software.

After disabling the anti-virus software

and running the backup option again it all went through without an error.

  1. hi, in my case, even after having disabled my antivirus, it wasn’t possible to copy the file autorun.inf, even with windows explorer. the access remains denied !
tomtom home annouces finished copying, but if I check the folder, it’s empty !!
then I retry to back up he device and I get the same error message concerning autorun.inf, access denied.
    HELP !!!!!!!! 🙁

  2. The same issue is affecting a large number of programs that use files which have been used in malware.
While the files themselves are completely legit and of no threat, the heuristics scanning of most AV’s tends to flag every file included in malware and add its fingerprint to it’s databases, causing legitmate software to fall over too.
