While Apple’s 3.1.3 firmware was minor in terms of new features, it’s had the side effect of opening up a huge market for scam sites. These sites will promise you a 3.1.3 jailbreak for newer devices like the iPod touch 3G, or a baseband 05.12 software unlock. Those desperate enough to “just give it a shot” will find, 100% of the time, that they were misled. After money has changed hands they’ll be told “well the 05.12 unlock is coming, in the meantime here’s the 05.11 unlock” (of course the 05.11 unlock was intended to be free, as you all know). They’ll hold your money until one day the 05.12 unlock does come out, even if that’s months later (and of course it’ll be relehxxp www(dot)unlock-iphone-313(dot)com ased for free on ). In the meantime they’ll be able to claim they gave you part of what they advertised, and keep at least part of your money (in actuality they’ll usually keep all of it).

Just as a footnote to the above.....& it may be of help to other people...
I have had a Bluetooth retro fit kit fitted to my 04 X3....& it works great......I have connected the wires from the unused cig lighter to the eject box/snap in adapter (iphone) & it would seem that the the eject box takes care of the voltage so my iphone is charging nicely

Hello to all iphone users,
is it me or is the ringer switch a little to easy to accidentally catch, and thus make your phone silent. Then of course you miss that all important call from the lottery to tell you are a zillionaire.

Its`only money anyway who needs it.

Hi there

Wonder if anyone can help - not clear from this forum which is best option and I'm a beginner.

Have a 2010 idrive and want to download all my songs from my iphone 16gb (latest version)

I know I can use bluetooth to connect and pair....and download my contacts.....but whats the best way to download and save all my tunes to the idrive?

Do I need a lead to plug into my iphone and the bmw idrive input socket and if so, can anyone send me a link of the correct one to buy?

many thanks

p.s. can you download video clips to idrive??

@Jak - I have the same thing happen on very random occassions. Let say I call Ben from the iDrive by either selecting his name in the A-Z list or iDrive voice dial, either way the point is his name and number ARE in the iDrive and stay displayed on the screen during the call. If 5 minutes later on the same journey Ben calls me back, the iDrive doesn't tell me the identity of the incoming call it just shows ********** so you end up fumbling to find the phone to look on the iPhone itself at who's calling.

I've not found any logic to it, I thought it could be if two people, say Ben and Amy who live together, have the same number under each name for their home phone. When a call comes in from that number the iDrive doesn't know which number to display. I have tested this and it's not the case because incoming calls from a mobile number only associated with one person sometimes show as *******.

I thought maybe I had too many contacts syncing to the iDrive (it also used to take several minutes to resync all entries when first setting off on a journey but not always) so now I've gone into the new option in the Bluetooth setting to pick which contacts you want to sync and selected my "favourites" only.

Regards

Hi

I have s/w 3.1.3 and can sucessfully pair my iphone 3G to my BMW 2005 e90.

I have been able to pair my iphone with many earlier s/w versions, but lately not all of my contacts are being displayed as caller id's on the idrive screen.

Can't understand why some names appear and other don't even though they are in my contacts list and shown on the iphone itself during an incoming call.

Any ideas???

Thanks

<strong>@Manolis Kapa</strong> - I'm afraid it could be that your iPhone has a faulty wi-fi module. If you are unable to connect to your own wifi have you tried connecting to a friend's wifi or another wifi network? If you cannot connect to any wifi network then I'd suggest your iPhone wifi module is faulty. I had this happen and eventually went to the Apple store and then tried to connect to the Apple store wifi and it wouldn't work so they replaced the iPhone for me.

Hi I am having a bluetooth retro fit kit fitted to my BMW 04 X3...it is UK model so it is not pre-wired......I want to use a snap in adapter but obviously there is no connectors under the centre console.... My question is .... is there a voltage transformer in the snap in adapter or will the voltage have to be regulated somewhere along the power cable ie from the wires from the unused Gigarette lighter
Many thanks for any replies

That happened to mine also but just had it replaced about 3 weeks ago
I called and complained to customer service who told me they would make an exception for the repair and also went to 2 different apple stores the second one did it willingly didnt even seem to care about the exception
He did it as he said in the spirit if christmas
Which I was happy about because I did not and still do not have the 800+ for repairs!

actualy the instructios were incorrect i did the install by just using common sense i installed the actuall dock by removing the little money holder by unscrewing the 4 torx screws at the bottom. i fed the wire into the hole that i was meant to go into then i went to the back of the console and removed the wood plate that holds the two ciggaret lighters as soon as i removed i ti saw the hook up mounted to the floor board. as soon as i made the connection the unit started working and i havent had a problem yet

Why can't BMW get the Bluetooth thing right. My UK dealers haven't a clue which type of phone works and which doesn't. If Ford and Vauxhall can make a systen which works for a fraction of the BMW system factory then BMW are taking the urine. the problem with BMW is that they seem to think that they don't have to try too hard. The new C class Merc is becoming mroe and more inviting.

<strong>@Kirk</strong> - Sorry for the delayed response, I only bought the snap-in adapater which simply clips into place. I have read of people retro-fitting the entire unit including wiring diagrams, all I can find is a BMW bulletin that looks to show the wiring you may need?

I have the same issue. My macbook is only a couple months old (basic 2009 Macbook) and if I ignore the low battery warning and let it run until it totally shuts down it will oftentimes (but not everytime) wipe out not only the clock, but my network password as well. (Not sure why the password gets lost due to the battery...strange).

Hard to believe Apple dropped the use of a 10-year coin cell battery (that costs under $1 retail) and instead went with a capacitor or even a rechargeable battery. Obviously it was a very bad idea. Apple may be the king of innovation, but sometimes they should stick with things that are known to work quite reliably.

Thanks for the thread.

For those with other browsers, different operating systems or just updated versions with different paths try just copying the shortcut from your start menu to your desktop (via drag & drop) and them appending the new shortcut with the URL.

The previous poster that complained his shortcut does not work likely edited a firefox icon.

Also people that have installed IE7 or IE8 may need a new path for IE. Search for iexplorer and create the shortcut from the found program by right clicking and select send shortcut to desktop.

All,

I read thought the post on this blog and thought I'd add my experiance of pairing my iPhone 3G with BMW X5 (2005) (not iDrive). Following the instruction in the manual I was able to pair the two units... However, strangly it all decided to stop!

I was able to make and receive calls via the automatic bluetooth pairing. I could never get the names to show on disply but that was the least of my agony. 4 weeks after the X5 disply still shows the name of my iPhone as paired but fails to pull any of the addresses or indeed send or receive calls! I must admit, I was completely oblivious to the world of incompatibilities between BMW and iPhone before this happened.

I am puzzled as to how the thing worked fine and then just decided to stop. I tried to delete the profiles from both the X5 and the iphone ...turn the wifi off... then pair the devices, which I get a successful message appearing on the disply. However, everytime I try to browse my address book I get NOTHING!

Have I missed something?

At first it seemed to work when I tried this yesterday with 3GS & 2006 525xi. All entries were synched and I could dial using the iDrive. Then when I got into the car this morning all addresses were gone from my iDrive. Also, when I tried voice-dialing yesterday (phonebook was synched) the iDrive told me the phonebook was empty although all entries were there.

Thanx anyway! I am impressed by the ingenuity you guys have!

<strong>@LeonardG</strong> - It looks like you've missed a space after /iexplore.exe" [SPACE] and you also need to have the http:// infront of mail.yahoo.com

So it should look like
<strong>C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://mail.yahoo.com</strong>

Try pasting that and see if that works?

While using either method I get a message saying "problem with shortcut" then under that it says "'C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"mail.yahoo.com' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct.
And all I can do is hit "ok"
I copied everything correctly (copy and paste) and as far as I can tell, did everything right.
Can someone tell me where I may have gone wrong or am I just the lucky one who can't do this?

All,
To have my car phone software upgraded to the latest version (Sep '09) I have been quoted a whopping £486 +VAT. To replace the phone unit itself it was £850 + VAT. Oh and neither are guaranteed to fix the issue.

I am at a loss as how I can get the iPhone working with my in car phone prep. Anyone have any ideas on how I can just get the f*cking thing to work would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Neil, I have exactly the same problem. Apple told me yesterday to reprogram my iPhone to see if that would help...but I haven't had a chance yet. My BMW is a 328i convertible.

Scoopz,
Thanks for the info, but I have a mild form of OCD when it comes to things like this and it really gets on my t*ts when things just dont work. Even more gauling is the customer service in my local BMW showroom. I have written to BMW asking what they are going to do to fix my bluetooth issue. I will keep you all posted on what happens.

Cheers

I have a problem with my iphone 3g and the quality of sound the recipient hears, they complain they can hardly hear me. It has now been into BMW twice and they claim its the phone not the system as its a new phone. All other parts work well sync contacts perfect, no issues with version 3 either. The car is a 520d. Any advice would be appreciated.

@<strong>Rahim </strong>- I'd check with the dealer whether you bought an iPhone 2G cradle or an iPhone 3G cradle. I have the 2G cradle and although the 3G(and 3GS) *just* fit in, it's a very tight fit and probably not too good for the phone.

You are correct though, the cradle is nothing more than a very expensive charger. There is meant to be a connection to an external aerial to give a stronger signal but I've never noticed this. The cradle does NOT connect to the iDrive or stereo in any way it is simply charges the iPhone, I'll repeat that again as many others seem confused by this, the BMW iPhone cradle is just a glorified iPhone charger.

To enable your iPhone to connect to the iDrive/stereo to make and receive calls you still have to pair it via bluetooth. If your car didn't have the bluetooth module installed from the factory then I'm afraid you're out of luck and will need a 3rd party bluetooth kit installing.

Also, please note that the iPhone cradle does not allow any function of the iPod part of the iPhone to work through the stereo.

Hi
I have BMW X5 (2005 Plate). I have bought from a BMW dealership an iPhone adapter for an iPhone 3G (not the S). Part Number 84 21 2 158 682. The part snapped into the armrest just fine. getting the phone in is not so seamless as it seems you have to uncomfortably force the phone in.

Anyway the phone eventually goes in and charges fine. I get no bluetooth connectivity neither does the phone get picked up once snapped into the cradle.

On the computer console in the car when I go to the telephone options on the screen it says "activate phone" and below that there is two options. "Emergency" and a telephone symbol. Neiher of which do anything. Essentially I have bought myself a rather expensive car charger for £59.99. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get this working.

I have an iPhone 3G with firmware 3.1 (7C144)

Thanks for your help in advance

@<strong>David</strong> - Thanks for the info, sorry about wordpress giving you a hard time with the embedded HTML tags :-) I like the idea of having an active desktop with links to most used content and programs. I'm not sure how you could get around the nag prompt to open or save .exe files from the links though, there probably is a registry hack somewhere but I've not come across it yet. Let me know if you find out though.

I don't know if it could help you guys, but i've programmed a dinamic website to run in my XP's Active Desktop.

I had the problem that i wanted the desktop, which runs on IE, to open the links not in some IE window but in FF.

I achieved this by linking the FF.exe and passing the url as parameter.

<a>Link from IE to FF</a>

Notice the double quotes around the url as well!!

It keeps always asking if i want to open or save the exe but, it's best i could.

Do you have any idea to avoid having to accept executing files??

I'm not building malware, only shortcuts to my most used folders, files and websites. I already tried LaunchinIE plugin but it won't work for me :S

@<strong>Keke </strong>- I've had a good hunt around and asked everyone I know on twitter but nobody's come back with a windows equivalent to OS X's Disk Utility I'm afraid. Windows has a similar built in admin console "Disk Management" to partition and format drives but not for creating disk images.

There are two programs that I've found but neither are freeware, however, they do both offer free trials.
<a href="http://www.drive-image.com/" rel="nofollow">R-Drive </a>(15 day trial)
<a href="http://www.winimage.com/winimage.htm" rel="nofollow">WinImage</a> (30 day tiral)

See how you get on with either of the above programs, just create .iso files rather than .dmg files as explained in this blog.

If you do manage to find one, please let me know.

@<strong>Gary </strong>- Thank you for taking the time to post such a detailed explanation of the issues you are having with the newer iDrive systems displaying the address book in the incorrect Last Name, First Name order. Hopefully BMW or Apple will acknowledge this issue and one of the two will create a fix in the next software update, so please keep us posted.

Regarding the problem with the iPhone not charging off the BMW iPod adapter, this is a bit of a touchy subject with Apple. There are basically 2 pairs of pins in the dock connector that can be used to charge the older iPods, one pair was used when charging with a firewire cable and the other pair used when charging with a USB cable. Apple planned to phase out the firewire charging pins after the iPhone 2G, they'd been giving 3rd party manufactures such as Bose, Altec Lansing, BMW, etc several years warning about this change over but they all seemed to ignore it. Sure enough when the iPhone 3G (and newer iPods) were released there was outrage (even by me) as people found their new shiny iPhone/iPod wouldn't charge on Bose SoundDocks, BMW iPod cables and many many more. What really annoyed me was that my Apple, yes Apple, HiFi that I bought not long before the iPhone 3G came out doesn't even charge my iPhone 3G/3GS. So even Apple ignored their own warnings about the change over with the charging pins!

Sorry I'm starting to waffle, long story short, the boffins at Griffin (and a few other places) had the same thought as me "it's only some pins that need relocating in the dock connector" and brought out a little <a href="http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewire-to-usb-converter" rel="nofollow">adapter that will allow you to continue using your older iPod accessories with the new iPhones and iPods and reclaim that all important charging feature</a>.

I've not tried one with a BMW iPod adapter but considering it's just swapping over some charging pins and the rest of the pins are just routing as normal I see no reason why it shouldn't work. No doubt BMW are still scratching their head about this one and will *eventually* bring out a identical adapter with a BMW logo on it and perhaps offer free of charge to people who bought the iPod adapter but you might as well just buy and try the Griffin one now.

@Gary - Thank you for taking the time to post such a detailed explanation of the issues you are having with the newer iDrive systems displaying the address book in the incorrect Last Name, First Name order.

Apple planned to phase out the firewire charging pins after the iPhone 2G, they’d been giving 3rd party manufactures such as Bose, Altec Lansing, BMW, etc several years warning about this change over but they all seemed to ignore it. Sure enough when the iPhone 3G (and newer iPods) were released there was outrage (even by me) as people found their new shiny iPhone/iPod wouldn’t charge on Bose SoundDocks, BMW iPod cables and many many more. What really annoyed me was that my Apple, yes Apple, HiFi that I bought not long before the iPhone 3G came out doesn’t even charge my iPhone 3G/3GS. So even Apple ignored their own warnings about the change over with the charging pins!
