I’m also on 3.0 now, and still have the 2000 contacts “repair” and is still working in my car (120d from 2006 with nav. pro )

1st gen iphone

I just upgraded the same iphone to 3.0. Now the only contacts that will load into the car are V-Z. Same iphone, same car. The contacts still are in the iphone they just will not appear in the phone book in the car.

I can’t seem to find any thing about this issue so far. Any thoughts?

1- Make sure the you iPhone name does not have ’s like Jack’ s phone, those symbol are no transferable

2- If that did not fix it follow the following steps

-Exported the contact list from outlook to a DOS comma separated CVS file

-Under outlook contact I created another contact list named test-contact.

-I restored the exported CVS file under test-contact.

-I have noticed that the test-contact list is missing some of the records ( some names and some phones). And that how I figured out that the missing records are the corrupted records.

-I compared the contact list with the test-contact list and manually added the missing records in the test-contact list.

-Through iTunes I only synced my iPhone to the test-contact list and made sure only the test-contact listed is synced to the iPhone.

-I deleted the pair on the iPhone and iDrive then repaired them again. And wow I saw my contact list in the iDrive and there was no drops out in audio.

I’ve just noticed today though that even though all my contacts are sync’d with the iDrive, when I receive an incoming call it shows ***** on the iDrive screen rather than the name. It’s done this twice so far and both times the name has definitely been in the iDrive and if the person calls back a second time it shows their name correctly. This happened with my 3G running 3.0 and my new 3GS.

Looks like 3.0 may be a little buggy then, watch this space….

Last time we exchanged info was your great 2000 + contacts to get Iphone talking to I drive in M6. ( remember donation to Children in Need) Now updated software to 3.0 and lost 75% of contacts from I drive !! tried removing device, restoring phone etc but to no avail…any thoughts ?
Also finding battery life far worse ..

The fact that Apple enabled A2DP on with 3.0 update shows that it’s not just a hardware limit and if BMW’s bluetooth module was advanced enough they could perhaps enable A2DP with an iDrive update but don’t hold your breath.

I’ve not got DAB (UK equivalent of Sirius) or even got the iPod connection in my M5 so I stick with good old fashioned 6CD changer and an MP3 CD in the dash. So long as the iPhone does the “phone” bit well that’s enough for me whilst it gets some fresh juice from the snap-in adapter.

I spent about an hour on the phone, Skype, actually, with a tech person from apple who tried several reset options. itunes wasn’t able to recognize the iphone, and none of the reset tricks worked, and he advised me to get it to an apple store. Unfortunately for my handset, I live in Israel, and they don’t have iphone here officially, so the one private company authorized to run a sort of apple store cannot deal with it. He suggested sending it Stateside with a friend to deal with it with Apple. Not doable. Besides, it’s unlocked and jailbroken, so apple wouldn’t be too helpful once they realized that.

The good new is that I actually solved the problem, or rather, the iphone cured itself, as it did once before, when the handset had a stroke with the same symptions.Here’s what I did: I let it rest overnight (not enough) and then again, letting the battery drain, but not completely (I doubt that either one of these steps made a difference, but you never can tell). Then I kept on playing with shutting it down and powering it on. Finally, I got to the screen where the red slider shows up to power it down the usual way. The first couple of times I got to that screen (what sequence or just what I did I do not know) the white apple showed up seconds later, leaving the phone as it was. But finally, it did go all the way through the correct cycle and turned on with the “desktop” screen showing, and it’s now working fine.

Almost–I still have no wifi capability. I certainly hesitate to reset my network settings again. I don’t understand the directions for doing what one can do from the screen that has the IP address and the DHCP/BootP/static tabs. I don’t know what they mean; ditto with the rest of the page. For now, I’ve been using a neighbors wifi, so I can’t get any info that isn’t freely sent to my handset. Soon, I’ll have an AE in my apt. along with my own internet service. If you could walk me through whatever steps I can take prior to getting my own internet/wireless router I’d appreciate it (especially since I still won’t be able to access hot spots untill something is changed). And/or, walk me through whatever I can do when the router does arrive. I do connect to my neighbor’s wifi with my macbook, so if the information is accessible from there I can get it if I know where to find it.

also, on another topic, if this is ok here, or maybe there’s a different place on the blog to ask this? I was wondering about upgrading to the most current version of the OS, but know that something bad could happen if I do it with my unlocked, jailbroken iphone from iTunes without doing something to keep it from getting locked by apple (happened once before). I followed the instructions on iclarified to initially jailbreak, but don’t find any instructions about taking an already jailbroken handset with 2.2 running. Can you guide me to the right directions, or do you have any comments about whether the upgrade is worth the trouble?

Unfortuantely after much testing, resetting & restoring of routers and iPhone I gave up and visited a Genius at a local Apple store. The Genius was unable to diagnose the fault (putting it down to hardware failure of the wifi chip) and replaced the iPhone on the spot with a new one.

Since yours is an iPhone 2G, I’m assuming it’s over a year old and hence out of warranty? If you are being plagued with the same fault I had then I’m afraid it looks like you may need to ditch the faulty 2G and get a new handset.

Sorry for the potentially bad news, if possible make a free appointment at your local Apple Genius Bar and see what they say. Even though you are out of warranty you can still have free Genius bar appointments.

PS – alternatively, if you have any mobile phone insurance with your network operator or home content insurers you may want to try claiming on that?

I just tried resetting network settings as suggested, and now the iphone no longer works at all! when I power it on, the white apple comes up, and then . . . nothing happens. It just stays a blank screen with the white apple. No wifi, no phone, no calendar, no contacts, no nothing ,,,,,nadA! Help! any suggestions?

So I find myself this morning taking the car back to the dealer so they can re-load the entire software back onto the car, which BMW tell me can take up to 10 hours. The service people also pointed out that verson 2.1 and 2.2 can have problems where calls drop, your voice doesnt get relayed to the conversation going on……. aaargh!

Everyone tells me that in June/July, Apple will release a major upgrade to the iPhone, so are we likely to see more problems ?

Had I know this and the expense its causing I would have left the iPhone in a box at O2 (who have stuck there heads in the sand on this one) and gone back to my trusty old Blackberry.

Come on Apple & BMW, please work together!

All iPhone 3G’s should still be under original 12months warranty so just make a backup in iTunes and make the long 2hr trek to your nearest Apple store but make sure you make a Genius bar reservation online first.

@G - You might find you’ve got a faulty iPhone. My 3G iPhone recently refused to connect to any wi-fi networks (see this post) and after following all my own guidelines above it still wouldn’t work. A trip to the Apple store and he confirms it’s a faulty iPhone and issues me with a replacement. Some wifi connectivity issues just can’t be fixed, especially if it’s hardware failure.
To find and set the IP address manually, go to Settings->WiFi and then in the list don’t click the actual name of the network itself, click the little blue arrow to the right of it and it should take you to a manual settings page for that network.

It used to pick up a wifi for a minute then just drop it and any time I would reset the network settings and then reboot, it would pick it up again for just a second then drop it. Now it will not even do that! I am just convinced (or maybe just hopeful) that it is a software issue, not a hardware.

I have the 2.2.1 Apple Firmware and have Jailbroken with 2.2.5 Pwnage Tool. Even when I restored to Apple, the problem persisted.

Also! It will not ring while in sleep mode.

Don’t worry about your initial backup being smaller than your used HDD space, the backup will probably excluded all the default operating system files as these can be restored from the original install DVDs, it might also be choosing to not backup any temporary files, caches, built in print drivers, multiple languages, etc which would easily amount to 5GB. There’s a free app called Monolingual that can do this for you, I ran it and saved 5GB+ on my MB Air.

One question: My hard drive is 38.74GB but the Time Machine backup is only 33.63GB. Could you explain why the backup is smaller? I’ve checked and there are no exclusions listed other than the external hard drive.

Moving on, when you import the movies from the virtual SDHC DMG images into iMovie it is going to result in HUGE file sizes like you have found. Without sitting at my Mac I’m sure there’s an option that lets you pick which drive to use to store the imported movie files? You can certainly move them to the USB drive BUT bear in mind a USB2.0 drive is not going to be as quick as an internal drive or a Firewire drive when it comes to editing the raw movie data. I tend to move mine to an internal RAID array (several disks arranged to give much quicker than normal read/write speeds), I’ve never tried it from a USB drive so couldn’t tell you how much of a performance loss there is going to be but give it a try.

You might want to keep the raw data on the main internal drive whilst you edit it, then once the movie is complete, export it and then move the raw files to the USB HDD (I think you just drag and drop them in iMovie browser window).

IMPORTANT: If you put the raw movie footage onto your internal drive, say a 26GB file, then by default this 26GB file will get backed up to your Time Machine drive and you’ll soon find 320GB is gone. If you are going to work this way, in the preferences for Time Machine add the iMovie Projects Events folder to the list of folders NOT included in the backup.

I’ve just returned a 500GB WD Passprt drive to WD for replacement as it died completely. For this reason I wouldn’t recommend moving your iMovie collection to the same drive that your Time Machine Backup is on. Leave the iPhoto Library on your main drive and then if your computer dies you’ve got a backup on your TM drive and vice versa. Also, there would be a performance loss running iPhoto off a USB drive.

I have now bought a 320gb external hard drive. I’ve backed up my mac using time machine and I have also moved the ‘SDHC backup’ folder to the external hard drive.

I have imported the movie into imovies and it has created a folder of 26GB. Would you recommend moving the entire movies folder to the external drive? Will I still be able to edit it easily in imovies?

Also, would you recommend moving my entire iphoto library to an external drive? Is it easy to continue working of this?
