Hi Neil.

Nice to see you're 'keeping your eye on the ball'- no problems with v3.0 for me either. ;)

I've bought a 13" Macbook Pro to replace my old Macbook, which should be here today, so I've got a smile on my face. :)

Hope you're keeping well BTW.

Hey Scoopz. You fixed my issue last year with the iphone 2.0 not loading my contacts into the 2005 BMW 645 with the Nav system. Your 2000 contacts repair worked great.

I just upgraded the same iphone to 3.0. Now the only contacts that will load into the car are V-Z. Same iphone, same car. The contacts still are in the iphone they just will not appear in the phone book in the car.

I can't seem to find any thing about this issue so far. Any thoughts?

To everyone with iPhone+iDrive contact listing problems, I believe your issue can be one of 2 things:

1- Make sure the you iPhone name does not have 's like Jack' s phone, those symbol are no transferable

2- If that did not fix it follow the following steps

-Exported the contact list from outlook to a DOS comma separated CVS file

-Under outlook contact I created another contact list named test-contact.

-I restored the exported CVS file under test-contact.

-I have noticed that the test-contact list is missing some of the records ( some names and some phones). And that how I figured out that the missing records are the corrupted records.

-I compared the contact list with the test-contact list and manually added the missing records in the test-contact list.

-Through iTunes I only synced my iPhone to the test-contact list and made sure only the test-contact listed is synced to the iPhone.

-I deleted the pair on the iPhone and iDrive then repaired them again. And wow I saw my contact list in the iDrive and there was no drops out in audio.

Does anyone know if the follwoing was fixed?
With the Iphone 2.2.1 version of software it synched my address and etc. almost perfectly but, it ignores the comma(,) for pauses so I cannot send extensions. Also, only one of my contacts that have the same main work number get in. So if many contacts work at the same place and have the same number Johns Smith (555)555-5555,,,555 and Jane Doe(555)555-555,,,666 One of John or Jane will make it into the list. Not both.

Hi,
I have a problem with the way contacts are synced in my iDrive. I have an iPhone 3G (3.0 FW) and a all new BMW E92 M3 with the full Navigation system. Once I pair the iPhone with the iDrive all contacs are synced but the iDrive will sort it by Last Name/First Name although in the iPhone I have all options set to First Name/Last Name. I do not find any option in the iDrive to change this to First Name/Last Name. Can someone help me?
Thanks

OS 3.0 has not solved the problem for non-idrive users, in my 2004 Z4 the addressbook is not synchronizing despite placing the 2000 and removing &s from names of contacts. Removing the apostroph from the iphone name seems to have improved contact failures though.
If anyone knows the trick how to synchronize the addressbook in a non-idrive Z4 I would be glad to hear!

I have an iPhone 3g 16GB with OS 3.0 and a 2006 BMW 730d, since upgrading to OS 3.0 i cannot see any contacts in my iDrive, dissapointed doesn't come close to describing it. I wonder if some genius would write and App to link the iPhone phone and contacts with the BMW iDrive perfectly, surely this can now be done with developers being granted access to the Bluetooth chip?

@<strong>Jim E</strong> - Welcome back! Hmm I'm not sure why 75% of your contacts are missing from the iDrive. When you restored the phone did it keep the same name "Jim's iPhone" for example? Try restoring once more but after the restore change the iPhone name in iTunes to just iPhone or JEiPhone etc and then unpair and repair with the iDrive. The iDrive does seem to cache contacts for a while so it may be confused since the device has the same unique bluetooth mac address so it IS the same phone it's used to with the same name but perhaps 3.0 changes the addresses syncing somehow? Having said that, I didn't change the name of my iPhone and it worked ok.

I've just noticed today though that even though all my contacts are sync'd with the iDrive, when I receive an incoming call it shows ***** on the iDrive screen rather than the name. It's done this twice so far and both times the name has definitely been in the iDrive and if the person calls back a second time it shows their name correctly. This happened with my 3G running 3.0 and my new 3GS.

Looks like 3.0 may be a little buggy then, watch this space....

@<strong>Tod</strong> - Just to answer the question about music over bluetooth, unfortunately the current iDrive system does NOT allow this. In order to play music over bluetooth you need a car bluetooth system that supports A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) which very few car manufacturers support at present. A2DP is not a new concept, there are many bluetooth speakers you can buy that support it, my friend's just had media hubs installed in all his hotel rooms that support it too but the car manufacturers seem to be dragging their feet a little.

The fact that Apple enabled A2DP on with 3.0 update shows that it's not just a hardware limit and if BMW's bluetooth module was advanced enough they could perhaps enable A2DP with an iDrive update but don't hold your breath.

I've not got DAB (UK equivalent of Sirius) or even got the iPod connection in my M5 so I stick with good old fashioned 6CD changer and an MP3 CD in the dash. So long as the iPhone does the "phone" bit well that's enough for me whilst it gets some fresh juice from the snap-in adapter.

A2DP is not a new concept, there are many bluetooth speakers you can buy that support it, my friend’s just had media hubs installed in all his hotel rooms that support it too but the car manufacturers seem to be dragging their feet a little.

The fact that Apple enabled A2DP on with 3.0 update shows that it’s not just a hardware limit and if BMW’s bluetooth module was advanced enough they could perhaps enable A2DP with an iDrive update but don’t hold your breath.

I’ve not got DAB (UK equivalent of Sirius) or even got the iPod connection in my M5 so I stick with good old fashioned 6CD changer and an MP3 CD in the dash. So long as the iPhone does the “phone” bit well that’s enough for me whilst it gets some fresh juice from the snap-in adapter.

My 3GS is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I'll assume that that should be happy with BMW BT too.

Hi, i have a canon hf100 an use a 8gb sdhc card, recently i wanted to store some of te videos to free up some space, as i was going away an wanted to take my camera, i copied the .MTS files into a folder on my mac, which somehow got deleted, but now when i insert the card into my mac imovie does not pick it up atall so the remaining videos are literally untoachable, all my other sdhc cards work fine, i think when i took just the MTS files of it must have disturbed the card is some way? i can still record and playback the videos on my camera using this card but it just wont work when i interested the card to my Mac.

Any ideas what i can do?

Hi Scoopz,
Wow! thanks for replying!

I spent about an hour on the phone, Skype, actually, with a tech person from apple who tried several reset options. itunes wasn't able to recognize the iphone, and none of the reset tricks worked, and he advised me to get it to an apple store. Unfortunately for my handset, I live in Israel, and they don't have iphone here officially, so the one private company authorized to run a sort of apple store cannot deal with it. He suggested sending it Stateside with a friend to deal with it with Apple. Not doable. Besides, it's unlocked and jailbroken, so apple wouldn't be too helpful once they realized that.

The good new is that I actually solved the problem, or rather, the iphone cured itself, as it did once before, when the handset had a stroke with the same symptions. Here's what I did: I let it rest overnight (not enough) and then again, letting the battery drain, but not completely (I doubt that either one of these steps made a difference, but you never can tell). Then I kept on playing with shutting it down and powering it on. Finally, I got to the screen where the red slider shows up to power it down the usual way. The first couple of times I got to that screen (what sequence or just what I did I do not know) the white apple showed up seconds later, leaving the phone as it was. But finally, it did go all the way through the correct cycle and turned on with the "desktop" screen showing, and it's now working fine.

Almost--I still have no wifi capability. I certainly hesitate to reset my network settings again. I don't understand the directions for doing what one can do from the screen that has the IP address and the DHCP/BootP/static tabs. I don't know what they mean; ditto with the rest of the page. For now, I've been using a neighbors wifi, so I can't get any info that isn't freely sent to my handset. Soon, I'll have an AE in my apt. along with my own internet service. If you could walk me through whatever steps I can take prior to getting my own internet/wireless router I'd appreciate it (especially since I still won't be able to access hot spots untill something is changed). And/or, walk me through whatever I can do when the router does arrive. I do connect to my neighbor's wifi with my macbook, so if the information is accessible from there I can get it if I know where to find it.

also, on another topic, if this is ok here, or maybe there's a different place on the blog to ask this? I was wondering about upgrading to the most current version of the OS, but know that something bad could happen if I do it with my unlocked, jailbroken iphone from iTunes without doing something to keep it from getting locked by apple (happened once before). I followed the instructions on iclarified to initially jailbreak, but don't find any instructions about taking an already jailbroken handset with 2.2 running. Can you guide me to the right directions, or do you have any comments about whether the upgrade is worth the trouble?

@<strong>hava </strong>- thanks for the comment. I'm not sure if you have read my most recent blog entry about iPhone wifi problems (<a href="http://blog.scoopz.com/2009/04/03/iphone-3g-unable-to-join-the-network-wifi-error/" rel="nofollow">Unable to Join network wifi error</a>) but it sounds like you are expereincing the exact same problem I had recently with my iPhone 3G.

Unfortuantely after much testing, resetting & restoring of routers and iPhone I gave up and visited a Genius at a local Apple store. The Genius was unable to diagnose the fault (putting it down to hardware failure of the wifi chip) and replaced the iPhone on the spot with a new one.

Since yours is an iPhone 2G, I'm assuming it's over a year old and hence out of warranty? If you are being plagued with the same fault I had then I'm afraid it looks like you may need to ditch the faulty 2G and get a new handset.

Sorry for the potentially bad news, if possible make a free appointment at your local Apple Genius Bar and see what they say. Even though you are out of warranty you can still have free Genius bar appointments.

PS - alternatively, if you have any mobile phone insurance with your network operator or home content insurers you may want to try claiming on that?

my iphone 2g used to work just fine picking up wifi. a couple of weeks ago, for no reason that I can ascertain, it just stopped picking any wifi up--in my home, at cafes, anywhere. It sometimes would show that it was connected and had a strong signal, but the wifi icon did not appear and the error message about not being able to connect came up. same as everyone else, my laptop has no problem getting the wifi connection, nor does my other internet device, just the iphone.

I just tried resetting network settings as suggested, and now the iphone no longer works at all! when I power it on, the white apple comes up, and then . . . nothing happens. It just stays a blank screen with the white apple. No wifi, no phone, no calendar, no contacts, no nothing ,,,,,nadA! Help! any suggestions?

This has been baffling me for a couple of days!! I was talking about it on Twitter today and nobody else's iPhone was doing it. But after my battery died and I charged it again, the mysterious logo has vanished - how bizarre! Obviously the iPhone has the capability for displaying network names and/or other information in that space. I didn't like how it affected the layout & am pleased it's gone :)

Scoopz: Thanks for your answer.
I'll take it back, but I'm not certain that the shop will replace it. The machine is from oktober, so less than a year old, and have been treated pretty well, no other scratches or marks.

Thanks again.

@<strong>Chris</strong> - Yes that rubbing appears to be much worse than mine, I'd definitely take it in for an Apple Genius to look at. Is your machine less than 1 year old and in generally good working order (not been dropped or damaged in any way that could have bent the hinge or lid)?
My replacement machine was perfect for nearly a year until the hinge snapped completely (<a href="http://blog.scoopz.com/2009/01/20/macbook-air-screen-now-folds-flat-broken-hinge/" rel="nofollow">see this post</a>) and then it went in for repair and came back with a complete new upper lid unit. This new lid is not as well aligned to the lower half of the machine and is showing some slight rubbing marks again but nothing drastic.

Hi, I am soon to pick up a 2006 BMW 730D. I am also looking to upgrade my current mobile phone, but want something that will be fully compatible with the idrive system. I am thinking about an iphone 3G, is this a wise choice?, I see from the above posts that there have been some compatabilty issues, will there be any software conflicts? Also, if I go for the iphone, can I use the internet connection on the phone through the idrive system? Alternatively are there any other phones I should consider that work well with the idrive system. Thanks for any views on this.

I have just paired my new iPhone (v2.2) with my car (BMW 530d) and afterwards found that my sat nav failed, I lost all the radio stations and the iDrive became unstable.

So I find myself this morning taking the car back to the dealer so they can re-load the entire software back onto the car, which BMW tell me can take up to 10 hours. The service people also pointed out that verson 2.1 and 2.2 can have problems where calls drop, your voice doesnt get relayed to the conversation going on....... aaargh!

Everyone tells me that in June/July, Apple will release a major upgrade to the iPhone, so are we likely to see more problems ?

Had I know this and the expense its causing I would have left the iPhone in a box at O2 (who have stuck there heads in the sand on this one) and gone back to my trusty old Blackberry.

Come on Apple & BMW, please work together!

@<strong>Ashley </strong>- My friend stuck with his iPhone (the one in the photos above) since this article was first posted in October 2008 and it just got worse until the "bubble" eventually crept all the way around the edge of the display. We took a trip to the Apple store a week ago to get a fault with my iPhone sorted and whilst he was there showed them his iPhone with the bubble defect and they replaced it on the spot. The Apple Genius said he's never seen that fault before though, so mustn't be very common.

All iPhone 3G's should still be under original 12months warranty so just make a backup in iTunes and make the long 2hr trek to your nearest Apple store but make sure you make a Genius bar reservation online first.

@<strong>Jem </strong>- Glad it you had an easy fix!

@<strong>G </strong>- You might find you've got a faulty iPhone. My 3G iPhone recently refused to connect to any wi-fi networks (<a href="http://blog.scoopz.com/2009/04/03/iphone-3g-unable-to-join-the-network-wifi-error/" rel="nofollow">see this post</a>) and after following all my own guidelines above it still wouldn't work. A trip to the Apple store and he confirms it's a faulty iPhone and issues me with a replacement. Some wifi connectivity issues just can't be fixed, especially if it's hardware failure.
To find and set the IP address manually, go to Settings->WiFi and then in the list don't click the actual name of the network itself, click the little blue arrow to the right of it and it should take you to a manual settings page for that network.

Hi,
I am still having "No Wifi" problem after trying the "reset Network Settings", Restoring the phone and trying other odds and ends.

It used to pick up a wifi for a minute then just drop it and any time I would reset the network settings and then reboot, it would pick it up again for just a second then drop it. Now it will not even do that! I am just convinced (or maybe just hopeful) that it is a software issue, not a hardware.

I have the 2.2.1 Apple Firmware and have Jailbroken with 2.2.5 Pwnage Tool. Even when I restored to Apple, the problem persisted.

Also! It will not ring while in sleep mode.

Please help!
Thanks

I have the same problem. Also have the problem of an Apple store being two hours away, but I guess if I want it fixed I'll have to make the trip. Mine's on the left side though, working its way all the way down the side...getting progressively worse.

@<strong>Nik Mehta</strong> - I don't like partitioning a hard drive without reformatting, from past experience (on Windows apps) it can work but can also fail badly and you still end up losing all your data. It looks like there is a program call GParted that can do this though, have a read of:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080216071647156

Don't worry about your initial backup being smaller than your used HDD space, the backup will probably excluded all the default operating system files as these can be restored from the original install DVDs, it might also be choosing to not backup any temporary files, caches, built in print drivers, multiple languages, etc which would easily amount to 5GB. There's a free app called <a href="http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/" rel="nofollow">Monolingual </a> that can do this for you, I ran it and saved 5GB+ on my MB Air.

Thanks for your reply. Any guidance that you can give on partitioning the external hard drive without reformatting would be really appreciated.

One question: My hard drive is 38.74GB but the Time Machine backup is only 33.63GB. Could you explain why the backup is smaller? I've checked and there are no exclusions listed other than the external hard drive.

Thanks

@<strong>Nick Mehta </strong>- First thing to point out is that Time Machine will eventually fill up the entire 320GB drive. Whilst there is probably quite a bit of room on the 320GB drive after your first ful T.M. backup, hence you can drag your SDHC backup folder to it. With every subsequent backup T.M. does though, it will keep keep using the free space until it's all gone. There is no simple way to limit T.M. to only use say 200GB or 50% of the disk space. I've been meaning to write a new blog post about the workarounds for this, basically your options are partitioning the drive from new creating a 160GB partition for TM and 160GB partition for Documents, there's a bit of terminal magic you can do that sets a maximum limit for the TM backups or you can create a "sparse bundle" disk image on the disk to keep all your files in..it all sounds more complicated that it needs to be. Apple should just have a Time Machine preference for setting disk space allowance for T.M.

Moving on, when you import the movies from the virtual SDHC DMG images into iMovie it is going to result in HUGE file sizes like you have found. Without sitting at my Mac I'm sure there's an option that lets you pick which drive to use to store the imported movie files? You can certainly move them to the USB drive BUT bear in mind a USB2.0 drive is not going to be as quick as an internal drive or a Firewire drive when it comes to editing the raw movie data. I tend to move mine to an internal RAID array (several disks arranged to give much quicker than normal read/write speeds), I've never tried it from a USB drive so couldn't tell you how much of a performance loss there is going to be but give it a try.

You might want to keep the raw data on the main internal drive whilst you edit it, then once the movie is complete, export it and then move the raw files to the USB HDD (I think you just drag and drop them in iMovie browser window).

IMPORTANT: If you put the raw movie footage onto your internal drive, say a 26GB file, then by default this 26GB file will get backed up to your Time Machine drive and you'll soon find 320GB is gone. If you are going to work this way, in the preferences for Time Machine add the iMovie Projects Events folder to the list of folders NOT included in the backup.

I've just returned a 500GB WD Passprt drive to WD for replacement as it died completely. For this reason I wouldn't recommend moving your iMovie collection to the same drive that your Time Machine Backup is on. Leave the iPhoto Library on your main drive and then if your computer dies you've got a backup on your TM drive and vice versa. Also, there would be a performance loss running iPhoto off a USB drive.

Just a few more questions, if you don't mind.

I have now bought a 320gb external hard drive. I've backed up my mac using time machine and I have also moved the 'SDHC backup' folder to the external hard drive.

I have imported the movie into imovies and it has created a folder of 26GB. Would you recommend moving the entire movies folder to the external drive? Will I still be able to edit it easily in imovies?

Also, would you recommend moving my entire iphoto library to an external drive? Is it easy to continue working of this?

Thanks again.
